A Nairobi court has delivered a landmark ruling in a wildlife trafficking case that underscores Kenya’s commitment to environmental protection. On April 15, 2026, Judge Aileen Gichovi sentenced a Chinese national, Zhang Kequn, to 12 months imprisonment and a 1 million Kenyan Shilling fine (approximately 123,000 USD) for attempting to smuggle over 2,200 live garden ants through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
