According to a report from The Maritime Executive, the United Kingdom has effectively abandoned a treaty that would have transferred sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius. The arrangement would have involved continued United States military use of Diego Garcia in exchange for an annual payment. For now, existing arrangements persist, with the UK maintaining sovereignty and the U.S. Naval Support Facility operating without rental obligations.
